Emergency First Aid at Work Course

At First Class First Aid, I offer a range of first aid courses This includes the emergency first aid at work training which is by far the most popular course I offer. It is essential that employees are equipped with the necessary skills to handle medical emergencies confidently and effectively. This course is designed to empower participants to act swiftly in emergency situations.

Understanding the role of a first aider

Throughout the course, we cover the crucial responsibilities of a first aider. Participants will learn to assess potentially hazardous situations and provide immediate care to those in need. It’s important to understand that, upon completing the course, you will take on the responsibility of being the first point of care in a medical emergency, ensuring professional medical assistance is called when necessary.

Having a qualified first aider on-site at all times is vital for workplace safety. For more information on why first aid is essential in any business, you can explore the blog post on the topic. Below is an outline of what the course entails:

Managing unresponsive breathing casualties

The course covers how to respond to an unresponsive casualty who is breathing. I will guide you through a thorough top-to-toe survey, which is an essential step in identifying any injuries or medical concerns. Starting from the head and progressing down the body, this check ensures the casualty is properly assessed before any further action is taken.

Next, you’ll learn how to correctly position someone in the recovery position, which helps to open their airway and prevent choking while keeping them stable and ensuring they don’t roll onto their stomach.

Performing CPR and understanding the chain of survival

In situations where a casualty is not breathing, understanding the chain of survival is critical. I will teach the key steps involved: early recognition, early CPR, defibrillation, and post-resuscitation care.

Learning CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) is a vital part of the course, as it’s a life-saving skill that can make all the difference in an emergency. While administering CPR may seem daunting, this course will provide you with the knowledge to feel more comfortable with the process, and the confidence needed to act decisively in a crisis.

Safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

An AED is a vital tool in the event of cardiac arrest. During the course, you will learn when and how to use an AED to help restore a normal heart rhythm. This can significantly increase the chances of survival in an emergency situation.

Providing first aid for specific medical emergencies

In addition to the core first aid skills, the course covers a range of medical emergencies, including:

  • Choking: Quick response techniques to prevent suffocation.
  • External Bleeding: Managing bleeding using dressings, bandages, and applying pressure.
  • Burns: First aid for treating minor to severe burns.
  • Shock: Recognising and managing symptoms of shock while waiting for professional medical help.
  • Seizures: Ensuring the safety of individuals during and after a seizure.
  • Minor Injuries: How to treat minor injuries to prevent them from worsening.
