I work with businesses across Norfolk, including Saxon Air, a private charter airline based in Norwich. I provide tailored first aid training to ensure their staff are equipped with essential lifesaving skills. Given the nature of their work, they are on base which is often remote and with limited access to emergency services, first aid training is a vital necessity.
Earlier this year, one of their employees, Pouria, completed our Emergency First Aid at Work course, a decision that would soon prove to be lifesaving.
The emergency situation
While walking through the town centre of Budapest with his partner, Pouria witnessed a woman suddenly collapse into the arms of her companion. Seeing that he was struggling to support her, Pouria instinctively stepped in. However, there was an immediate challenge: a language barrier that made communication difficult.
Drawing on his recent first aid training, Pouria quickly assessed the woman’s condition, checking her breathing. It became clear that she was unresponsive, with no signs of life. Without hesitation, Pouria began CPR, following the exact techniques he had learned just a month or two earlier during his First Class First Aid training course at Saxon Air.
For 15-20 minutes, Pouria continued administering CPR until the ambulance arrived. Upon their arrival, paramedics used a defibrillator to stabilise the woman’s condition. Thanks to Pouria’s swift actions and the skills he had developed during his training, the woman was given a fighting chance at survival whilst waiting for the ambulance.
The impact of first aid training
Reflecting on the experience, Pouria emphasised how crucial his Emergency First Aid at Work training was:
“This experience reinforced the importance of first aid training, knowing the basics can be lifesaving.”
During the course, I trained the team at Saxon Air in the following key skills:
- Understanding the roles and responsibilities of a first aider
- How to deal with an unresponsive breathing casualty (top-to-toe survey and recovery position)
- How to deal with a non-breathing casualty (CPR and chain of survival)
- How to safely use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
- How to provide first aid to a casualty suffering from
- Choking
- External bleeding
- Burns
- Shock
- Seizures
- Minor injuries
This real-life scenario highlights the critical role of first aid training in everyday situations. Whether in the workplace or out in public, having the confidence and knowledge to respond in an emergency can mean the difference between life and death.
